Basketball
The NBA Development League, or NBA D-League, is the official minor league basketball organization of the National Basketball Association. Known up until the summer of 2005 as the National Basketball Development League (NBDL), the NBA D-League started with eight teams during the fall of 2001.
In March of 2005, NBA commissioner David Stern announced a new plan to expand the D-League to fifteen teams and develop it into a true minor league farm system, with each NBADL team affiliated with one or more NBA teams. For the 2010-11 season, it consists of 16 teams.
The three basketball positions normally used by organized basketball teams are guard, forward, and center. More specifically, they can be classified into five positions: point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward, and center.
The rules of basketball do not mandate them, and in informal games they are often not assigned. But in organized and professional leagues the five positions are often followed to give a team balance.
The point guard (PG), also known as the number "1", is the team's general and the best ball handler on the floor.
The Hornets, Rockets, Pacers and Nets have completed a four-team deal that will send Trevor Ariza to New Orleans, Courtney Lee to Houston, Darren Collison and James Posey to Indiana and Troy Murphy to New Jersey. This trade made a lot of sense for each team involved. Let's take a look at how it will affect each club.
New Orleans Hornets: The Hornets are committed to surrounding Chris Paul with a better supporting cast and keeping him in the Big Easy for the foreseeable future.
For as long as one can remember, the Clippers have been regulars in the lottery. The organization peaked in the heart of the Elton Brand era but is far removed from that team at this point. The Clippers are set to enter a new era now, though, one that shows a lot of promise. Could it be time for the Clippers to alter their identity from lottery regulars to postseason regulars?
When the Clips landed the number one pick in the 2009 draft and used it to select Oklahoma standout Blake Griffin, many viewed it as a potential turning point for the franchise.
The Pistons spent half a decade recently as Eastern Conference Finals regulars, winning one NBA Championship along the way, but as is the case with all great teams, that era has come to an end. When the Pistons shipped Chauncey Billups to Denver a couple of years ago, it signaled that the team was ready to move on from the group that had won the title, and the team has been in a transitional phase since.
The two key members of the title team that remain are Tayshaun Prince and Richard Hamilton.
The National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player (MVP) is an annual National Basketball Association (NBA) award given since the 1955-56 NBA season. It is the highest regular season individual honor that can be earned by a player.
The winner of the award receives the Maurice Podoloff Trophy. Maurice Podoloff was of the first commissioner (then called the president) of the NBA who began the position in 1946 and retired in 1963.
Voting for the MVP winner takes place immediately following the regular season.
With summer league in the books, we've got a better idea of what roles each of the top 10 picks in the 2010 NBA Draft will play this season.
John Wall, Point Guard, Washington Wizards: It's difficult to project how Wall will fit in with Gilbert Arenas, but he should be a focal point of the Washington offense. He'll be the starting point guard from day one, as Arenas will slide to the two. Wall will show his incredible speed and quickness, as he did in the summer league, but his shaky jumper could hurt him and he'll probably turn the ball over a lot.
On June 18, 1932, in Geneva, Switzerland the first international federation concerned with just basketball was formed. The International Basketball Federation was made to govern the sports international playing of the game.
Then, only three years later on February 28, 1935, the FIBB was officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) helping make it possible for men's basketball to become part of the 1936 Summer Olympic Games in Berlin.
The NBA was formed in 1949, when the Basketball Association of America merged with the National Basketball League. At first there were seventeen teams, but in 1950 they consolidated into 11 teams, and by 1954 there were only eight teams.
Their goal was to have every team playing in an arena in a major American city. They had success with teams in Los Angeles, Boston, and Washington D.C.
In the 50s, the Lakers won 5 championships, becoming the league's first dynasty.
